An Unforgettable Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Rwanda

Young mountain gorilla, Wilderness Sabyinyo

As a travel enthusiast, wildlife filmmaker and co-owner of Journeys by Emerge, I’ve had the privilege of exploring some of the most breathtaking destinations in Africa and around the world. Yet, nothing quite compares to the awe-inspiring experience of gorilla trekking in Rwanda. This journey was not just a highlight of my travels but a life-changing adventure that I am thrilled to share with you.

From the moment I landed in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, I knew this trip would be special. The city, rich in history and culture, welcomes travellers with open arms. The spotless, beautifully manicured streets, new-age buildings and warm hospitality of the Rwandan people were some of my first impressions of this small vibrant African city.  I took some time to explore the local markets, visit the Genocide Memorial, and enjoy the incredible flavours of Rwanda. But the true highlight awaited me in the lush forests of Volcanoes National Park.

Wilderness Sabyinyo Lodge, Rwanda

The excitement built as I arrived at my lodge, we had a late arrival and I couldn’t see the landscape around me. After a delicious dinner we retired to the comfort of our beds, too excited for the next day’s adventure to sleep at all. Walking out of our room at Wilderness Sabyinyo lodge the next day, we were overcome by the view in front of us. Mist rose from the forest as the rising sun sun cast a soft light into the trees. This was my first teary moment, and definitely not the last of the trip. The Park’s headquarters was a short 20 minute drive away where we gathered for a briefing on the trek ahead. Our knowledgeable guides provided insights into the gorilla families we were about to meet and shared important safety tips and some “gorilla language”. With my gear ready and anticipation high, we set off on our trek through the dense forest.

The trek itself was an adventure, navigating through thick vegetation and steep slopes. The sounds of the jungle, from the calls of exotic birds to the rustling of leaves underfoot, created an immersive experience. Each step brought us closer to the gorillas, and my heart raced with every moment.

Words can hardly describe the emotions I felt when we finally encountered a family of mountain gorillas. First just some black shadows in the trees and then suddenly we were surrounded. Out of a clearing in the bamboo the silverback appeared, majestic and powerful, watching over his family with calm authority. The nurturing mothers created a scene of tranquillity and connection that I will never forget.

But most amazing was the youngsters, curious and playful, trying everything they could to get close to the strange creatures visiting them for this brief hour, while the guides tried their best to maintain distance.

Spending an hour with these incredible creatures was humbling. Their eyes, so expressive and intelligent, seemed to communicate a deep understanding. Observing their behaviours, from foraging to grooming and an occasional beating of a chest, offered a glimpse into their world and underscored the importance of conservation efforts to protect these endangered animals.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is more than just an adventure; it’s a profound reminder of our connection to nature and the responsibility we have to preserve it. This experience left me with a renewed sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Tips for Your Gorilla Trekking Adventure

  1. Prepare Physically: The trek can be challenging, but in Rwanda they do their best to make sure that every visitor gets their hour with the gorillas. Still, doing some walks in preparation will make the experience even more enjoyable.

  2. Pack Smart: Essential items include sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, gardening gloves, a good camera, and plenty of water. Trust me, you’ll want to capture every moment!

  3. Respect the Gorillas: Follow the guidance of your guides and maintain a respectful distance. These creatures are wild and deserve our utmost respect.

  4. Stay Present: While it’s tempting to capture every moment on camera, don’t forget to simply be present and absorb the experience. The memories you make will be just as vivid. I am so grateful that a colleague advised me not to pick up my camera for the first 15 minutes and to just observe the gorillas. This allowed me to really be in the moment and have eye contact with the gorillas, something you will miss if you are only looking through a camera.
